this is fascinating. I always wondered about what would have happened to me in that time. They gave People with Asthma arsenic and maybe I would have ended like Anne de Burgh.

Yes, I think these shops have merit. My herbal meds work as well (if not better) than the prescribed variety. I can’t wait to see your neck of the woods!!

Fantastic bit of research and writing, Vic.

In Chelsea there is a what is called a physic garden. I think it has continued since Tudor times.

The Chinese have a lot of herbal remedy shops round here. They offer herbs and roots to treat all sorts of ailments and acupuncture too. We have a large Korean and Chinese community here in my part of South London. My youngest comes home speaking Korean phrases picked up from friends in her class at school.
